Wine Vinegar
Also known as: Balsamic Vinegar, Malt Vinegar (wine-derived)
Vinegar made from wine is generally considered halal because fermentation converts the alcohol into acetic acid.
Why?
Vinegar produced from wine or other alcoholic beverages undergoes a full fermentation process that converts ethanol into acetic acid, eliminating the intoxicating substance entirely. The overwhelming majority of scholars consider the resulting vinegar halal regardless of its alcoholic origin, since the transformation (istihalah) changes its essential nature.
Good to know
This applies to vinegar itself, not to wine or beer used directly as a cooking ingredient (e.g. wine reduction sauces), which remain doubtful/haram depending on scholarly view.
