Isinglass

Halal

A fish-derived gelatin used to clarify beverages — generally accepted as halal since fish do not require zabihah slaughter.

Why?

Isinglass is a form of collagen/gelatin extracted from the swim bladders of fish, traditionally used to clarify beer and wine. Since most scholars hold that fish do not require Islamic slaughter to be halal, fish-derived gelatin including isinglass is generally accepted as permissible on its own — though its use specifically in alcoholic beverage production raises a separate question about the beverage itself, not the isinglass.

Good to know

Distinct from mammalian gelatin, which does require halal-slaughter sourcing.
