Frequently Asked Questions
What does "mushbooh" mean?
Mushbooh means "doubtful." It's used for ingredients whose halal status depends on details not disclosed on the label, such as the source animal or processing method.
How accurate is the label scanner?
The scanner uses on-device text recognition, which can misread blurry or glossy labels. Always review and correct the extracted text before checking ingredients, and treat results as a starting point rather than a final determination.
Is this an official halal certification?
No. This is an independent, informational resource. For certainty, consult an official halal certification body.
How is the ingredient glossary built?
Entries are compiled from general halal-certification guidance and reviewed periodically. The glossary is a work in progress and grows over time.
How are prayer times calculated?
Prayer times are calculated on your device using established astronomical formulas based on your location and chosen calculation method (e.g. Muslim World League, ISNA, Umm al-Qura). No location data is sent to our servers.
Which calculation method should I use?
This varies by region and community. Muslim World League is a widely used default if you're unsure — check what your local mosque uses if you want an exact match.
Is my location shared with anyone?
If you grant browser location access, it stays on your device and is never sent to us. If you search by city name instead, that search is sent directly from your browser to a third-party geocoding service (Open-Meteo) to find coordinates — this doesn't pass through our servers, but it's worth knowing it reaches that service. See our privacy policy for more detail.
How does the Stock & ETF Screener decide if something is compliant?
Two screens are applied. First, a business-activity screen excludes companies whose core business is impermissible — conventional banking and lending, insurance, alcohol, gambling, tobacco, or weapons manufacturing. Second, for companies that pass that screen, a financial-ratio screen looks at things like debt levels and interest-bearing income relative to company size, broadly following AAOIFI-influenced thresholds used across the industry. Entries are marked "doubtful" where reasonable screening providers genuinely disagree, or where we can't confidently verify current figures.
Is the Stock & ETF Screener investment advice?
No. It's informational only, not a recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any security, and not a substitute for professional financial or religious advice. It also covers a limited, manually curated list of securities — not the whole market — and figures are as of the date shown on each entry, not live. See our disclaimer for more detail.
Why do different Sharia screening services disagree on the same stock?
There isn't one single universally agreed methodology. Providers such as AAOIFI, S&P/Dow Jones Islamic Market, and MSCI Islamic use similar but not identical thresholds and business-activity exclusions, so the same company can be classified differently depending on which standard is applied — this is normal and expected, not a sign that one source is wrong.
Where does the Ramadan Planner get my start date from?
Nowhere automatic — you enter it yourself. The exact start of Ramadan depends on moon sighting and varies by region and local mosque, so rather than guessing, the planner asks you to enter the date your community observes.
Is my Ramadan Planner data private?
Yes. Everything you enter — fasting status, Taraweeh, Qur'an pages, sadaqah — is saved only in your browser's local storage on this device. It's never sent to our servers, so it won't sync to another device and will be lost if you clear your browser data.
How accurate is the Islamic calendar?
It uses a standard calculated (tabular) Hijri calendar, not live moon sighting or the official Umm al-Qura calendar, so the actual start of a Hijri month announced by your local mosque or moon-sighting authority can differ by a day — this is normal and expected, most noticeable around the start of Ramadan and Eid.
How does the Zakat Calculator work, and is it a religious ruling?
It's a simplified estimate, not a religious ruling. It totals the zakatable assets you enter (cash, gold/silver, investments, crypto, business inventory, receivables), subtracts debts, and applies 2.5% if the result is above the Nisab threshold (85g of gold or 595g of silver, priced using rates you enter yourself). It assumes you've held the wealth for a full lunar year and doesn't cover every asset type or every school of thought's rules — consult a knowledgeable scholar or your local Zakat authority for your specific situation.
How accurate is the Qibla Finder?
The direction itself is calculated using great-circle geometry to the Kaaba's coordinates, which is accurate. The live compass needle depends on your device's magnetometer, which can be thrown off by nearby metal or electronics — if it seems wrong, move away from interference and recalibrate by moving your phone in a figure-eight motion. On devices or browsers without compass support, we show the static bearing from true North instead.
